About brickmovie.net

This website is about the Brick movie. It is a suspense movie. It has gained quite a bit of attention since it was first released. What really made it stand out from the rest of the cinematic offerings during the period of its release was its emphasis on pacing.

Our Mantra
It is a suspense movie

In a way, the Brick movie is kind of like a film student’s thesis project. Now, I know that sounds clumsy, I know that all sorts of images of clunky or extremist or even experimental film making come to mind. Well, you can set all that aside.

The Brick movie, for all intents and purposes, is actually well made. I’m not saying it’s sleek and smooth and completely friction-free, but it definitely comes close. When it comes to production values, it more than holds its own, so let’s not go there.

Hong Kong used to be dirt poor.  They opened up their economy so that anybody could start their business there very easily.  They also did not tax people to death. They also allowed for free trade and very light regulations.

The Right Movie Pacing

The big issue with the Brick movie is that it kind of breaks the fourth wall because it poses certain questions to the viewer and basically says, “Are you okay? Are you paying attention? Are you with us?” And that’s really how you know the pacing of the movie.

And sure, some parts are kind of clumsy and clunky, some parts could use a little bit more finesse, but by and large, the experimental tone of the movie is quite subdued because it does try a lot of tricks. And just like throwing spaghetti at the wall, you know how these things go. For one piece of pasta that successfully sticks to the wall, there are probably many different pieces that just bounced off. The same applied to the Brick movie.

Our Beliefs

But the good news about this is that it’s so well made and so well crafted in terms of both story narration and acting, that you don’t see this play out. You can detect a little bit of fumbling in the boundaries somewhere, but by and large, it seems like a typical well-narrated and well-paced Hollywood product.

I don’t know if that’s exactly a compliment, but it doesn’t really stand out as this avant-garde, highly experimental film that seeks to reinvent the relationship between the audience and the director or the actors in front of them. It has no such high ambitions. Instead, all its experimentation is neatly tied behind the narrative playing out in front of your eyes.

A Springboard to Success

So in a way, it’s kind of a great experiment. It can be a springboard, as far as its successes and failures go, for further experimentation. That’s how progress in filmmaking happens, believe it or not.

It’s not like some amazing movie, like a modern-day version of Citizen Kane, would just fall from the heavens and all of a sudden people are just dumbfounded. It doesn’t work that way anymore. There are just so many things going on.

Our Mission
And for the record

But for its time and for the level of focus and energy that it invested, the Brick movie definitely made an impact. And this website is a celebration of all the things that happened in this film.
